Another lesson from living with an Olympian

1984 Olympics, Mitch Gaylord

Lessons from living with an Olympian:
Don’t sweat the small stuff.

I was a young teenager watching my brother train for the Olympics.

And do you know what he ate right before a big competition?

Taco Bell and donuts.

I kid you not.

You can be an Olympian while eating crap food.

And his coach didn’t harp on him about it.

I share this story to encourage you to let go of some of the little things your child does that worry you, concern you, or drive you crazy.

Now, I don’t recommend encouraging your kids to eat fast food.

But what I do suggest is that you pick the one, two, or three most important issues to focus your parenting conversations on.

And let the small stuff go.

Because here’s the truth.

There are many scary unknowns in raising kids.

What’s going to happen tomorrow, next week, or next year?

What if they have bad manners at a friend’s house?

What will their friends think if they wear that outfit?

And the list goes on and on.

But it is possible to pivot from fear to trust.

The trick is to zero in on issues that are most important to you.

And manage your frustration and worries about everything else.

I can help you with this.

Olympians have coaches to master their sport.

Why not you?
