Be your teen’s biggest “influencer”
You watch your daughter consume endless TikTok videos on applying makeup, the latest clothing trend, the cool way to style hair, or what a “beautiful” body should look like.
Then, she spends hours trying to look like these unrealistic images.
You’re frustrated that she is wasting her time on worthless content.
You’re concerned that these “influencers” are preying on her appearance insecurities.
You worry that her self-confidence is eroding.
Social media has changed the blueprint for how to raise a teenager.
So how can you counteract the negative impact?
How can YOU be her biggest “influencer”?
First, be prepared.
She is not going to think any of this is a problem.
But ask her how she feels when she is watching these videos.
Confident and beautiful? Or,
Insecure and not pretty enough?
Assuming it’s the latter, does she like feeling that way?
Would she rather feel differently?
Point out that she is in control of what she chooses to watch.
Help her discover what does make her feel good.
Would she like more of that in her life?
Tell her all the ways you think she’s amazing to increase and solidify her self-worth.
Ground her in the words of Lady Gaga:
I’m beautiful in my way ‘cause God makes no mistakes.
I’m on the right track, baby, I was born this way.
Don’t hide yourself in regret, just love yourself, and you’re set.
I’m on the right track, baby, I was born this way.
I know it’s exhausting to parent, but she needs you now more than ever.
