5 Easy Steps to Take When You’re Feeling Blue

Over the last few years, I dreaded the “empty nest.” But, after having a house full of young adults for five straight months, I actually thought, “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” I was so excited for new-found time to focus on my coaching business and experience new adventures with my husband. Let me tell you, the first 24 hours were ridiculously fun.

And then it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Gone was the house filled with laughter, engaging conversations, exercising together, snuggles, and family dinners. I felt a deep loss of connection with my babies.

I pulled myself out of the office chair, threw on my shoes, and went for a walk outside. The pain and sadness were real. A huge chapter of my life had come to a close. As the tears formed and the heaviness washed through me, I looked up.

The colors and textures of the surrounding trees were a feast for my eyes, the birds were sweetly chirping, and the warmth of the sun on my skin made me feel alive. What was there to be sad about, in this moment, right now? The answer - nothing.

I experienced an immediate energy shift.

The next time you are feeling sad, lonely, overwhelmed, or disconnected, give this a try:

  1. Let yourself feel all the feels.
Whatever you are feeling is totally natural.

  2. Validate your feelings.
Give yourself a powerful validation like, “No wonder I feel sad right now given the fact that…”

  3. Accept what is.
Sit with your feelings and validation for a bit.

  4. Bring yourself to the present moment.
Ask yourself, “What is the problem right now, in this very moment?“

  5. Gratitude.
Find gratitude in the present moment and watch your energy shift.

Often what makes you feel sad is the narrative in your mind thinking about the past and what you have lost. If you can draw your attention to right now you will feel a sense of connection, engagement, and aliveness.

“The present moment is all you ever have.” – Eckhart Tolle
