Are You an Escape Artist?
Harry Houdini, Criss Angel, David Blaine, Dorothy Dietrich, and… YOU?
Well, maybe you can’t escape from a straitjacket while suspended in air, but have you ever felt like there is something you really want to do and yet you avoid doing it?
Most of us avoid taking action towards our goals by convincing ourselves that our objectives are too hard to achieve. Fear, or a lack of energy, often stands in our way.
This happened to me before I re-launched my website. I had been working on it for a few months while the kids were home during COVID. It was a labor of love and I was finally ready to share it.
But I was so scared of it not being perfect and I felt so exposed. Fear took over and I froze.
There are 5 things we can do to prevent being an escape artist and not achieving our goals:
Create Awareness: Know what the signs are and notice them.
For me, it’s playing mindless games on my phone. Red flag!Get Clarity: Get clear on what you really want.
I want to help people feel more engaged and alive.Make a Decision: Decide on doing something, even if it’s the smallest step.
I’m going to set a launch date.Commitment: Find an accountability partner or commit to yourself to take action.
Pick a date on my calendar and write it in.Take Action: As the Nike tagline says, “Just Do It.”
Click the send button.
After taking these 5 steps regarding my website, I received so many supportive and encouraging responses from all of you, and for that, I am truly grateful.
Quiet those unproductive thoughts. Tell yourself that feeling fearful or losing motivation about something you really want to accomplish is totally normal. Then, take action.
Where your focus goes, your energy flows.
P.S. A big shout-out to my always inspiring and infectious coach, Barb Heenan for identifying this syndrome.
