“Find out before you flip out.” Ted Lasso
I love the TV show, Ted Lasso.
(Spoiler alert!) In Season 3, Ted spirals when his ex-wife and her new boyfriend take a romantic trip to Paris.
He is consumed by the fear that they will get engaged.
When he shares his concerns with his friends, Higgins tells Ted to,
“Find out before you flip out.”
As parents, we can’t help but think about what might happen to our teenagers.
What if they hurt themselves or someone else while driving?
What if boys show up at the girls’ sleepover and everyone drinks?
What if they never get a job because they’re lazy?
The uncertainty can be crippling.
Our imaginations run wild while dread, worry, and fear set in.
This is no way to live!
You deserve to feel relaxed and enjoy these years with your child.
Now, I’m not suggesting you shouldn’t think about keeping them safe from harm.
But notice when you think the worst about scenarios that haven’t happened.
Because that feels awful.
And it doesn’t help your relationship with your teen.
So the next time you notice your mind spiraling down the “what if” path, listen to the wise words Trent Crimm told Ted,
“You can’t worry about something that hasn’t happened yet.”
