Have you ever thought about how your expectations impact your teen?

Have you ever thought about how your expectations impact your teen?

From the moment our children are born, we begin to dream about who they will become.

At some point along the way, those hopes and dreams turn into expectations.

Here are some common examples:

  • Don’t be lazy.

  • Get good grades.

  • Don’t drink or smoke.

  • Make friends.

  • Excel in your sport.

Expectations can be tricky. We think our expectations are aligned with what we know our child can accomplish.

But, when your child doesn’t meet your expectations, you feel disappointed.

Your child perceives your disappointment as judgment.

They get irritable and defensive.
They bury themselves in their rooms.
They stop talking to you.

These are all signs of shame and disconnection.

Your child can’t create the outcome you know they are capable of when they are distressed.

When they feel unsupported, they are less intrinsically motivated to do their best.

Your teen wants to feel like regardless of WHAT they do, you accept them for WHO they are.

That you are on their team.
That you will help them explore what happened.
That you will support them in figuring out what to do differently.

In each moment, you get to choose how you want to be:

Judgmental or accepting?
Intolerant or patient?
Rejecting or embracing?

Making this parenting shift is challenging but completely doable.
