How to Stop Your Teenager from Lying

Nothing pissed me off more than when one of my kid’s lied to me.

Do you feel the same?

You give them the chance to explain themselves, but they continue to lie.

And then the conversation explodes.

Now I get it.

You’re worried about what they did.

And you’re angry and disappointed that they lied about it.

You don’t want your teenager to be a liar.

You want them to take responsibility when they do something wrong.

But also know that no teenager wants to lie.

They’re scared.

They think you’ll be mad and punish them if they tell you the truth.

And if you’re like me, the lie pisses you off more than what they actually did.

So what can we do to stop it?

First, remember that they’re a good kid having a hard time.

Then, slow the conversation down so emotions aren’t firing.

Motivate them to tell the truth by correcting their thinking.

And then share why it’s important to you that they’re honest.

(Without making them feel bad about themselves.)

Explain that it’ll always be better for them to tell you the truth.

And then follow through on that promise.
