Smoking, Drinking, and Sex
Like it or not, your teen will be curious about smoking, drinking, and sex.
Knowing they may get involved in risky behavior causes a great deal of worry and anxiety.
When they ask to go to a high school party, your mind spins. You wonder:
Will they be safe?
Will there be drinking and smoking?
Will someone take advantage of them?
You want to shelter them but know you can’t protect them forever.
Listen, it’s completely natural for your teen to be curious about smoking, drinking, and sex.
It’s also completely natural for them to want to go to a high school party.
So, how do you keep your teen safe and make their high school experience easier to navigate?
You have multiple conversations.
Does this suggestion make you cringe?
If you were raised by parents who avoided discussing these topics, then the thought of talking about these issues with your teen may feel unfamiliar, awkward, and uncomfortable.
That’s okay.
You can survive discomfort.
It’s more important your teen learn the truth from you rather than from unreliable websites or misguided friends.
When you are courageous and initiate a dialogue, your teen feels it is safe to ask you questions.
You help them develop tools to navigate challenging situations.
You create a home where they feel comfortable confiding in you.
Conversations are the key to feeling calmer and more confident that your teen will make good choices regarding smoking, drinking, and sex.
And do you know what else happens?
You create the permanent, meaningful connection you desire.
