You Cannot Make a Mistake

Wait…what? Of course I can make a mistake.

This was the first Foundation Principal I learned in my Life Coach training program and boy, did I wrestle with this one.

I could think of plenty of mistakes I made: choosing the wrong high school for my son, losing touch with a dear friend from college, and eating that pint of Ben & Jerry’s last night. The list goes on and on.

The “Aha” moment I had is that a mistake is something you label after the fact.

The real fact is everyone is doing the best they can with their current level of consciousness.

So for example, regarding a high school for my son, I spent many hours researching and discussing options with my husband. After careful consideration, we made our choice. It was only in hindsight that we started to question if we made a mistake. The bottom line is we made the best decision we could at that time.

So let’s give ourselves some grace and not beat ourselves up over past choices. The most powerful thing we can do is recognize that we are doing the best we can at any given moment.
