How to Send Your Child to College with Confidence

confidence.jpg

As your child heads off to college, it’s perfectly natural to feel a mixture of emotions:

🤩 Excited they are launching the next chapter of their life.
😥 Scared that they might be put in danger or become ill.

🤩 Thrilled they will be meeting new people.
😥 Worried that someone might hurt them.

🤩 Exhilarated about the amazing opportunities that lie ahead.
😥 Terrified thinking about the dangers of sex, drugs, and alcohol.

Take a moment and notice that when your thoughts hop onto the “What if...” train, you are suddenly filled with fear and worry. You may think warning them is the best solution.

You talk to them about the importance of eating healthy and getting enough sleep.
You launch into life lessons about the dangers of alcohol and walking home alone late at night.
You lecture them about attending classes and keeping up with the curriculum.

They don’t listen.
They roll their eyes at you.
They tell you, “Mom, Dad, I’ve got it.”

You think you are helping them with your words of wisdom.
But your words are coming from a place of worry and fear, which does not serve them.

Instead, be confident, knowing that you have spent the last 18 years doing the best you could to arm them with all the knowledge and strategies they need to navigate this next chapter of life.

Your child knows this is a big step. Recognize that they, too, are filled with a wide range of emotions.

Tell them you are confident that they can handle challenging situations.
Tell them that you trust them to make good choices.
Tell them you will be there for them if a situation becomes unmanageable.

They want you to believe in them.

It really can be that simple when you quiet your worries and have faith that they will thrive.
