I’m Doing Everything!
Last week I flew to visit my daughter in NYC. Sitting next to me was a young couple and their two children. The toddlers were crawling all over their mom—one crying, the other demanding her toy. Their dad, who was sitting across the aisle, asked, “Hey honey, did you bring anything for me to eat?”
Sometimes you feel like you are doing everything to take care of everyone else. And you are doing it all alone.
Single parents typically find themselves trying to fulfill the role of both parents, but even co-parenting couples have difficulty finding balance and feeling supported.
You might be frustrated when it seems like you are the only one taking care of your child’s needs.
You’re the only one anticipating dangerous scenarios and strategizing how to keep them safe.
You’re the only one thinking through all the possibilities and potential consequences.
You might be weary that your workday seems to have no end.
You might feel sad that all your hard work goes unnoticed.
When you are engulfed by that draining energy, you might think you just can’t do it anymore.
But have you reached out and asked your loved ones for help?
Or are you just hoping they will read your mind?
When you push away their efforts, they may think trying to help is pointless.
Creating the family of your dreams takes hard work.
As the saying goes, “It takes a village.”
When you feel like you are at the breaking point, pause and breathe.
Notice what you are thinking and feeling.
Identify situations when you think you are not being heard or you want help.
Then make the time to communicate how you would like to be supported.
Often just being acknowledged and validated can relieve some of the weight you are feeling.
When you rely on your village, you move forward as a team.
Your family is an interconnected web so everyone’s energy and happiness impact each other’s. Imagine the joy you will feel when you ask for and receive the support you need.
